Event Details
This is the 12th annual boxing competition between the Cincinnati High School Boxing Team and The Aquinas Institute from Rochester, New York, with the teams alternating years hosting the event. There will likely be 20+ matches on the card.
The Cincinnati High School Boxing Team was formed in 1996 at Moeller High School, but is now open to students from any area high school. This year’s team includes students from Badin, Colerain, Elder, LaSalle, Madeira, McAuley, Moeller, Oak Hills, St. Xavier, The School for Creative and Performing Arts, Turpin, Walnut Hills and Withrow. Several members of the University of Cincinnati Boxing Club will also be competing. Members of these teams are training for upcoming Golden Gloves and NCBA boxing events.
The Aquinas Institute has a long tradition of boxing at their school. This is the 83rd year of their boxing program, the longest program of its kind in the country. The Aquinas team uses this competition to prepare for their annual Mission Bouts. Tradition holds that in 1932 two Aquinas underclassmen donned gloves to settle a personal grudge. The Mission Bouts began four years later as a way to raise money for the Basilian Fathers Missions in Latin America.
For the first time, this season’s show will take place at the Cincinnati Athletic Club, located in a historic building in Downtown Cincinnati. Started in 1853 the Cincinnati Athletic Club, the oldest athletic organization in the country, has a rich history of athletic competition and community involvement and offers Cincinnati a broad range of fitness facilities to improve the lives of its citizens.
All are welcome, come support both of these teams and see a very unique event, as these are two of the only high school boxing teams in the country.
